Madrid: check your terminal before you leave arrivals.
Before leaving arrivals at Madrid-Barajas, pull up your accommodation address and confirm which terminal you are in. Metro and Cercanías leave from different terminals and ticket rules are not identical across them, so check the official airport information for your terminal before you commit to a train.
Work out the connection past the airport while you still have data, then store the station name and the last stretch on foot. A reservation that just says Madrid is not much use when your host waits at a particular entrance, so send an arrival estimate early and keep the address saved for when the signal drops below ground.
Maps and messages sit comfortably in a small allowance on a short stay, provided photo backups and updates happen on Wi-Fi. If Madrid is your first stop on a longer journey, choose validity that lasts to your final day rather than one sized only for the airport transfer.

L9 Sud runs from both Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2. TMB states that the single ticket, T-casual and T-grup are not valid at those two airport stations, so check the official fares page and buy an accepted product before you reach the gate.
Look up the interchange for your accommodation instead of assuming the airport line stops at your street. Keep the route map and the name of the station where you change, and once you are outside, a saved doorway pin beats a general neighbourhood search.
Open attraction bookings before joining an entrance queue. Where the booking system allows it, download the ticket and keep the confirmation email, and agree an exact meeting point if your group splits up. Data helps with last-minute changes, but the booking should not live only on your phone.
Save before you goBefore you leave Wi-Fi, save an accepted airport ticket, the interchange map and a pin for your accommodation. Download any admission confirmations so you can open them offline.

Valencia Airport has a rail connection to the city, but the right line depends on where you are staying. Check the current network map against your hotel address before you pick a train, since service patterns can change.
