Japan eSIM guide: choosing data and setting up before you fly
Choose a Japan eSIM for travel: compare data allowances and validity, check phone compatibility, and review each plan's setup steps before you go.

What to check before you buy
Your first use of mobile data in Japan may be checking a train route, finding a hotel address or sending a message to say you have landed. Choose a plan with those moments in mind, and give yourself room for how you actually use your phone.
Begin with three questions: which dates you need data, which countries your trip covers, and whether your phone works with eSIM. A Japan plan covers Japan only. If your route includes other countries, look at each destination separately rather than assuming one plan stretches across borders.
These are data-only plans. They come without a Japanese phone number and without ordinary calls or SMS. Chat and calling apps run over the data allowance, while texts or calls made through your usual carrier are handled separately.
Choosing the right allowance for your trip
Start from how you normally travel. Checking a train platform and sending a handful of messages is a different task from uploading videos all day or relying on your phone as a work connection.
- Light use: download maps, tickets and music at home first, and keep mobile data for the odd search.
- Regular use: budget for navigation, restaurant searches, messages and sharing a few photos.
- Heavy use: review your recent usage and give yourself extra room for uploads and video calls.
Check the smallest plan's actual allowance against your estimated use instead of assuming it suits light use. A seven-day validity does not establish how much daily browsing it supports. For a figure based on your habits, use our travel data guide.
Japan eSIM data plans compared
Read the total allowance together with its validity. All the data is shared over the full plan period, so a 3 GB plan means 3 GB in total, not 3 GB each day. The plans listed here open to their full product details.
| Total data | Validity | Price | Plan details |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | €0.62 | View plan |
| 3 GB | 15 days | €1.90 | View plan |
| 5 GB | 10 days | €2.30 | View plan |
If you are away longer, pick a validity that runs to your last day, even when your expected usage is small. Open the full catalog for other durations and allowances.
Confirm your phone supports eSIM
Your exact phone model must support eSIM and be unlocked for use with another carrier. Models sold in different regions can differ, so the model name alone is not always proof. Use the to look up the manufacturer's guidance for your device.
On iPhone, Apple explains how to confirm the carrier lock in Settings, under General and About. See Apple's international eSIM guide for the current requirements.
Installing the plan and choosing when it starts
Go through the plan's setup steps while you still have a solid connection. Keep an offline copy, along with your bookings and the address of your first stop.
Buying the plan, installing it, and starting its validity period are not always separate events; they can coincide under a plan's terms. Check the plan's terms to see what begins the validity period before you install or switch the plan on, and follow the instructions supplied with yours.
When you are ready, set the travel line as your data line and follow its roaming instructions. Check your home line's settings on their own. Leaving your usual number active does not remove your home carrier's roaming charges.
Keeping your allowance for the trip itself
Fetch big files over Wi-Fi before you leave. Offline maps, saved tickets and downloaded shows cut how much your phone has to pull while you are out.
Leave automatic photo backups, app updates and big video uploads for a connection you picked for that job. If your plan supports tethering, a laptop draws from the same allowance, background activity included.
Look at your usage after the first full day. Your own numbers beat any general “GB per day” rule. For the next country on your route, browse the destination catalog and check its coverage separately.
Frequently asked questions
Will my normal phone number keep working?
On a compatible phone, your usual SIM can stay installed, but that alone does not guarantee your normal number works abroad. Calls and texts through your home line depend on the line being enabled and on your carrier's service, roaming availability, and charges. The Japan plan itself is data-only and gives you no local number.
Does the allowance reset each day?
No. The listed data allowance is the total amount for the entire validity period, not a daily allowance.
Will the same plan work in nearby countries?
These plans cover Japan only. Read the coverage list on each product, and arrange a separate connection for any country that is not included.
